Set SMART Goals
When you set goals, make sure you set them SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. If you don’t do this, you might find yourself setting unrealistic goals that are almost impossible to achieve. This could lead to frustration and feelings of failure. That’s not what we’re going for here. Once you’ve set your goals, put them in writing. Writing down your goals gives you a sense of commitment and ownership, which can help keep you on track.
Change Your Environment
What does this mean? Simple: change your environment so it’s conducive to achieving your goals and becoming the person you want to be. If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t go to a bar or a restaurant where you know everyone will be eating unhealthy food and drinking alcohol. If you’re trying to write a book, don’t let your social media accounts distract you. In order to achieve what you want to achieve, you have to change your environment. Shut out all the noise and only focus on what you need to focus on.
Ask for Help
You don’t have to do everything on your own. In fact, it’s a good idea to let other people help you. Whether that means asking someone to proofread a paper, or hiring a coach to help you train for a sport, asking for help could be the key to your success. Sure, it’s nerve-wracking to ask for help. But once you do, you’ll feel so much better. You’ll also be surprised by how willing people are to help you.
Remember: Failure Is a Learning Opportunity
At some point, you’re going to fail. That’s just a fact. But that doesn’t mean you’ve failed entirely. It just means you’ve learned what doesn’t work for you. You’ve learned and improved. Failure is a learning opportunity. Every time you fail and look back, you can see what you did wrong. You can see where you went wrong. Then, you can correct those mistakes and avoid those pitfalls in the future. Failure can be a great thing. It can also be a learning opportunity. You can use it as a chance to get better.
Don’t Be Afraid to Change Course
Let’s say you’re trying to achieve a certain goal and you’re not making any progress. What do you do? Give up and feel bad about yourself? No. You change course. You reevaluate your approach and try something else. If you keep trying and failing to reach that goal, you need to change course. If a certain tactic or strategy isn’t working for you, don’t be afraid to try something new.
Conclusion
Every new year brings new challenges and new opportunities for growth. Resolving to make your life better and then following through on that resolution can be a difficult thing to do. It’s important to remember that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing, in the wise words of Abraham Lincoln.
