Why I Love Coloring As An Alternative To Meditation For Mental Health
These days it seems like everyone is stressed. We’ve all heard just how bad our modern lifestyle is for our health and mental wellbeing.
And whether you have a busy commute and stressful working environment, or perhaps long days of looking after the kids, chances are that you know exactly what I am talking about.
We spend our days indoors, cut off from natural light and fresh air, and filled with stressful thoughts of debt and mortgages. Also, many of us feel that we lack a sense of purpose or don’t know what to do with our lives.
We don’t sleep well. We’re bombarded with images of other people’s perfect lives on social media. And we spend our “downtime” watching shows about a zombie apocalypse or vicious vampires.
Is it any wonder that we’re perpetually stressed? Or on the verge of a nervous breakdown?
Stress and fatigue are such common ailments today that they are even collectively referred to as “21st Century Syndrome!”
So, what helps to relieve our stress and fatigue? One popular answer is meditation. In many ways, meditation serves as the perfect antidote.
Meditation is a practice that involves calming your mind and focusing on just one thing (or often nothing at all).
Meditation gives you the ability to “switch off” from your worries and decide that you’re going to focus on something else.
Through the art of meditation, you can rise above your problems, no matter what they might be.
At the same time, this kind of sustained focus has been shown to increase cortical thickness, attention, mood, creativity, and even IQ!
There’s just one problem: meditation takes a long time. Most of us have difficulty finding 20 minutes during the day just to sit quietly (and yes, we know that’s part of the problem).
Moreover, meditation takes even longer to learn. There’s a good chance that you might have tried meditation before, and if you’re reading this, then that probably didn’t work out for you.
The thing is, meditation requires intense mental discipline, and it takes years to master. Years before it starts offering its real benefit.
That’s where coloring comes in.
Through my search for a relaxing stress relief technique to replace the therapeutic effects of meditation, I came across adult coloring and have been hooked ever since.
To me, coloring is, in many ways, a meditative experience. When I am absorbed in a great piece of coloring, I completely forget about all of my worries.
All of my pesky problems slip away as I find myself wholly enraptured in what I am doing. When I color, I am focused on that one single goal of blending the beautiful colors on my coloring pages.
My steadfast concentration on a single thing during my coloring sessions allows me to forget about all my worries and whatever else is bothering me.
At the same time, the sustained attention that coloring requires helps me improve my ability to concentrate on any one thing at a time.
The internet and advertising have taught me to flit my attention from one thing to the next without spending any real-time sustaining my focus and engaging with a piece of content.
Coloring has the reverse effect, helping me stay focused on just one thing for an extended period.
So coloring becomes an escape in the moment – a great way to relax and unwind. But at the same time, it helps to train me to switch off from my worries and be able to find calm wherever I am.
And unlike meditation, coloring is something that anyone can enjoy right away. You don’t need years of experience and training, it isn’t linked with ancient, mystical practices… it’s a lot of simple fun.
Coloring is creative too, and that in itself has been therapeutic and rewarding for me. When was the last time you created something beautiful?
